The island is quite small measuring 194 meters long and 105 meters wide. Connected to the mainland of Eschenz by a bridge that spans, about 200 meters it features the Werd Monastery also called St. Othmars Monastery.

Although owned by the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln the island is leased to Franciscans who live in a building connected to the chapel. The Franciscans care for the sick and elderly conduct baptisms and host church weddings.

Visitors can access the monastery chapel freely. Outside the monastery there’s a grass and stone labyrinth that mirrors the one at Chartres Cathedral in size.

Daily prayer sessions known as Liturgy of the Hours or Prayer Hours are held at 7;00 am, 12;00 pm and 6;00 pm. These prayers are open, to all welcoming everyone who wishes to participate.
