The main island of the small archipelago “Im Werd” (also known as the Werd Islands), located in the westernmost part of Untersee in Lake Constance, is the island of Werd near Eschenz in the canton of Thurgau.
The island measures just 194 meters in length and 105 meters in width. A wooden bridge, which stretches for around 200 meters, connects the island with the mainland of Eschenz.
A notable feature on the island is the Werd Monastery, also known as St. Othmar’s Monastery.
Although the island is owned by the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln, it is leased by Franciscans who reside in the adjacent building attached to the chapel. The Franciscans look after the sick and elderly, perform baptisms and church weddings.
The monastery chapel is open to the public. In front of the monastery there is a labyrinth of grass and stone lines, which is the same size as the one in Chartres Cathedral.
The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Prayer Hours, is celebrated daily at 7.00 am, 12.00 pm and 6.00 pm. These prayer times are open to all and everyone is welcome to attend.
