Highlights of Switzerland
Highlights as far as the eye can see: Matterhorn in Zermatt, Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, Interlaken with Jungfraujoch, Piz Corvatsch in St. Moritz, Lugano in the south, Montreux on Lake Geneva…
Switzerland is very known for famous mountains like the Matterhorn and Jungfraujoch – both internationally renowned and legendary -, as well as picturesque landscapes, lakes, and mountain villages such as Zermatt, Gstaad, Arosa, and St. Moritz, as well as cities like Lucerne, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, and Geneva.
Famous Swiss UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Switzerland has 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic vineyard terraces of Lavaux, the Jungfrau-Aletsch region with the Aletsch Glacier, the Old Town of Bern, the Sardona Tectonic Arena, and Monte San Giorgio, where several thousand fossilized fish and marine reptiles, some up to six meters long, have been discovered.
Rustic Swiss Traditions and Customs
Characteristic of Switzerland is that each region has its own unique traditions and customs. For example, Folklore events, Gäuerlen, Naturjuuz, Bücheln, Betruf and Alpsegen, Geisslechlöpfen, Bödelen, and the now world-famous Muotathaler weather smellers in the Lucerne-Lake Lucerne region. This stands in contrast to the customs in the urban Zurich region, such as Sechseläuten, Knabenschiessen, and the Street Parade, which has become the world’s largest techno party.
Schwingen (“Swiss wrestling”) is a very popular and traditional Swiss national sport. Nowhere else in the world.
Chocolate, Cheese and Watches
Important trademarks of Switzerland are Swiss chocolate, Swiss cheese, and the legendary Swiss watches:
- Typical Swiss chocolate brands are Lindt and Cailler.
- The most famous cheese varieties are Emmental, Gruyère, and Appenzeller cheese.
- Renowned Swiss luxury watches: Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre.
Typical Swiss Food
Swiss cuisine is known such as Fondue and Raclette, Zurich-style sliced veal (“Zürcher Geschnetzeltes”), Bernese rosti, and Engadine specialties like Bündnerfleisch, Bündner nut tart, Capuns, Maluns, and Pizokel.
Prominent figures raved about Switzerland…
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: «Ringsum die Herrlichkeit der Welt!» (“Surrounding the splendor of the world!”) and Gottfried Keller: «Trinkt, oh Augen, was die Wimper hält, vom goldenen Überfluss der Welt!»(“Drink, oh eyes, what the eyelash holds, from the golden abundance of the world!”).
World Record Mountain Railways
For decades, Switzerland has been a global innovation leader in the development and installation of mountain railroads. It is hardly surprising that Switzerland has the most world record-breaking mountain railroads of superlatives in the world.
