Lakeside Living: Vevey’s Stretch of Shoreline on Lake Geneva
Throughout history Vevey played a role, as a trading hub that thrived on industry and the rise of tourism in the 19th century which continue to drive its economy today. The town is also renowned as the base of operations for the giant Nestlé.
Veveys municipal area spans a 2.4 kilometers and encompasses the flat alluvial cone formed by the Veveyse river over time at its entry into Lake Geneva. It also includes Charmonthey Hill to the east of the rivers course. Additionally Vevey lays claim to two kilometers of shoreline on Lake Geneva featuring three landing stages and a boat harbor.
Nestled at the base of Mont Pèlerin Vevey boasts a setting that stretches along the Vaud Riviera against the backdrop of the Alps.
The town flourished during its age in the 19th century Belle Epoque era. Today remnants such, as hotels and a flower lined lakeside promenade serve as reminders of this glamorous period.
At the same time, Vevey is a modern regional center and is home to the headquarters of the global food company Nestlé. One of the town’s most famous residents was the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last 25 years of his life here. A memorial has been erected to him on the shores of the lake.
