Vevey, one of the coveted “pearls of the Swiss Riviera”, is characterized by a unique combination of features. The town is located directly on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva and offers a majestic view of the Alpine panorama. Its exceptionally mild climate, the picturesque vineyards and the wealth of excursion destinations in the region add to its charm. The proud paddle steamers that glide across the lake are another characteristic element of this charming town on Lake Geneva.
Historically, Vevey was an important trading center and benefited from industry and the emergence of tourism in the 19th century, which are still the mainstays of its economy today. The town also gained fame as the headquarters of the global company Nestlé.
The municipal area of Vevey covers a modest 2.4 square kilometers and includes the flat alluvial cone that the Veveyse has heaped up over time at its mouth into Lake Geneva. It also extends over the hill of Charmonthey, which stretches to the east of the course of the river. A roughly two-kilometre stretch of shoreline on Lake Geneva, which includes three landing stages and a boat harbor, also belongs to Vevey.
The picturesque setting of Vevey extends along the southern foot of Mont Pèlerin and stretches along the Vaud Riviera, which stretches along the edge of the Alps.
The town experienced its first heyday during the Belle Epoque at the end of the 19th century. Even today, magnificent hotels and the palm-lined, flower-bedecked lakeside promenade are reminders of this glamorous era. At the same time, Vevey is a modern regional center and is home to the headquarters of the global food company Nestlé. One of the town’s most famous residents was the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last 25 years of his life here. A memorial has been erected to him on the shores of the lake.
