The Eiger Trail is the route to get up close, to the north face of the Eiger. This thrilling hiking path offers a two hour journey filled with excitement and adventure allowing you to feel like you can almost reach out and touch the world renowned north face of the Eiger.

Hiking along the north face of the Eiger

The journey kicks off with a train ride, on the Jungfrau Railway to Kleine Scheidegg. Alternatively you have the option to alight at the Eiger Glacier station (saving you about an hour). For those starting from Grindelwald and heading towards the Eiger Glacier, an adventure awaits on the Eiger Express gondola lift.

Upon arriving at the Eiger Glacier station a brief climb will bring you face, to face with the awe inspiring north face of the Eiger. Here you’ll catch sight of the metal ladders that aid climbers in accessing the Via Ferrata Eiger Rotstock.

An incomparable high mountain experience without ropes or carabiners! From this point, the trail leads along the foot of the Eiger North Face for around an hour, offering breathtaking views of the Wetterhorn and Grosse Scheidegg.

The trail then leads over steep alpine meadows and scree slopes. There are safety ropes at the exposed points. You pass a beautiful waterfall on the way. Finally, the trail zigzags down to the restaurant and the Alpiglen train station.

If you have binoculars with you, you can watch the climbers on the wall. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Kleine Scheidegg all the way to the Lauberhorn and the green Grindelwald valley.

The hike from Kleine Scheidegg to Alpiglen railroad station takes around 3 hours, the hike from the Eiger Glacier to Alpiglen railroad station takes 2 hours.

You can get from Alpiglen station to Grindelwald by train, cab or on foot:

The journey time by train between Alpiglen Station and Grindelwald is about 25 min. over a distance of about 4 km. The connection from Alpiglen Station to Grindelwald by train is operated by Wengernalpbahn with departure from Alpiglen and arrival in Grindelwald.

It takes 19 minutes by cab and around 1 hour on foot.
