With the Eiger Express from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier
From the terminal in Grindelwald, the world’s most modern tricable gondola takes you directly to the Eiger Glacier in 15 minutes. With a direct transfer to the Jungfrau Railway, you can reach the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe 47 minutes faster. This gives you more time up on the Jungfraujoch to enjoy the panorama and the adventure world.
3S stands for “3-S cableway system”, which is used on the Eiger Express. The 3S system is a modern ropeway technology in which three suspension ropes are used to transport the cabins. Two of the suspension ropes are responsible for the stability of the cabins, while the third rope acts as the drive rope. This technology enables a higher transport capacity, larger spans and higher speeds compared to conventional ropeway systems. The same technology was also used on the Matterhorn Glacier Ride cable car, which connects Zermatt with the Matterhorn glacier paradise at 3,883 meters above sea level.
The innovative 3S ropeway system combines the advantages of a gondola lift and an aerial tramway. Thanks to the double suspension cable guide, large spans can be crossed with only a few supports and with extreme wind stability. On the Eiger Express, only 7 supports are required along the entire 6,483-metre route. This means that the natural landscape is preserved and no clearing is required.
The 3S technology is the only ropeway system that harmoniously combines the needs of transportation with minimal intervention in nature. Although the acquisition costs are higher compared to an aerial tramway, the benefits in terms of the environment and operation justify this investment.
With the Jungfrau Railway from the Eiger Glacier to the Jungfraujoch
The Jungfrau Railway has been running for over 100 years to the highest mountain station in Europe, Jungfraujoch, in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch”.
The Aletsch Glacier, on the east side of the Jungfraujoch, is part of the “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest and longest glacier in the European Alps in terms of area, with a length of 22 kilometers and an area of 78 km2.
At the Konkordiaplatz at 2,830 meters, a 6 km2 ice surface, three mighty firn streams flow together: The Grosse Aletschfirn from the west, the Jungfraufirn from the northwest and the Ewigschneefeld / Unterer Grindelwaldgletscher from the north.
