With the Eiger Express from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier
From the terminal in Grindelwald, the world’s most modern tricable gondola takes you directly to the Eiger Glacier in 15 minutes. With a direct transfer to the Jungfrau Railway, you can reach the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe 47 minutes faster. This gives you more time up on the Jungfraujoch to enjoy the panorama and the adventure world.
The abbreviation 3S refers to the “3 S cableway system,” which is utilized on the Eiger Express. This advanced ropeway technology employs three suspension ropes to ferry the cabins. While two of these ropes ensure cabin stability the third one serves as the driving rope. Compared to ropeway systems this technology allows for increased transport capacity, wider spans and higher speeds. A similar system was also implemented in the Matterhorn Glacier Ride cable car linking Zermatt with the Matterhorn glacier paradise at an altitude of 3,883 meters.
The innovative 3S ropeway system combines features of both a gondola lift and an aerial tramway. With its dual suspension cable guide it can span distances, with support structures and exceptional wind resistance. Along the 6,483 meter route of the Eiger Express seven supports are needed, preserving the natural landscape without requiring extensive clearing.
The 3S technology is distinguished by its ability to blend transportation needs with impact, on nature effectively. Despite costs compared to an aerial tramway the environmental and operational benefits make this investment worthwhile.
With the Jungfrau Railway from the Eiger Glacier to the Jungfraujoch
The Jungfrau Railway has been running for over 100 years to the highest mountain station in Europe, Jungfraujoch, in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch”.
The Aletsch Glacier, on the east side of the Jungfraujoch, is part of the “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest and longest glacier in the European Alps in terms of area, with a length of 22 kilometers and an area of 78 km2.
At the Konkordiaplatz at 2,830 meters, a 6 km2 ice surface, three mighty firn streams flow together: The Grosse Aletschfirn from the west, the Jungfraufirn from the northwest and the Ewigschneefeld / Unterer Grindelwaldgletscher from the north.
