AROSA Bear sanctuary
.
On August 4, 2018, the Arosa Bear Sanctuary was opened in Schanfigg, Graubünden. It is the first bear conservation project of the animal welfare organization “Vier Pfoten” in Switzerland. The bear sanctuary, which is located at an altitude of 2,000 m, was created in collaboration with Arosa Tourism, the municipality of Arosa and Arosa Bergbahnen.
A total of up to five bears rescued from poor husbandry conditions will find a species-appropriate new home on an area of around 2.8 hectares. Each bear has an area of 5000 square meters at its disposal.
The facility is also used for tourist purposes and is usually open to visitors continuously from June to October. However, if there is enough snow and the bears are active, it is also possible to open selectively outside this period.
