Rheinau Abbey, a Benedictine monastery situated on an island, in the Rhine within the Rheinau municipality in Zurich canton has a history dating back to 778. It ceased operations in 1862 and subsequently from 1867, to 2000 the monastery premises were utilized as a facility.

The historic monastery ensemble is currently utilized by the Spiritual Path Community and the music center “Musikinsel Rheinau.” Additionally the monastery church is, under the ownership of the parish of Rheinau.
Situated on Klosterinsel Rheinau, the former monastery complex stands out as one of Switzerlands sacred structures. The late Gothic Baroque monastery, formerly designated as the church of St. Mary represents a pinnacle of High Baroque architecture in the country. The richness and grandeur of its interior are truly awe inspiring.
The architectural design of the monastery church in Rheinau mirrors that of a Vorarlberg cathedral. Upon entering the church ones attention is immediately drawn to its side altars emphasizing its theme. Devotion, to the Virgin Mary. The ceiling frescoes, crafted by Ticino artist Francesco Giorgoli have maintained their vibrancy over time. Stand as a striking focal point.
Guided tours of Rheinau Abbey Church
The only ones allowed to lead guided tours at the parish of Rheinau are the sacristans. External individuals are not permitted to conduct these tours. Each guided tour typically lasts around 60 minutes. The designated meeting spot is, in front of the monastery church.
Throughout these tours participants will learn about aspects including art, history, architecture and spirituality related to both the monastery and its church. Additionally visitors have the opportunity to explore parts of the monastery church that’re usually off limits to the public such as the choir featuring an altar and choir stalls as well, as the sacristy showcasing exquisite vestments, chalices and beautiful inlays.
