Brigitte Heller from Goldau SZ is the new Jass Queen 2025. In the grand final of SRF Samschtig-Jass on December 27, 2025, she prevailed in a high-level final against Sabina Lang, Susanna Müller, and Alois Högger to be crowned the best Jass player of the year.
But this evening offered much more than just an exciting competition. The traditional Saturday evening show was charmingly hosted by Sven Epiney, while Jörg Abderhalden, three-time Swiss wrestling champion, guided the game with great expertise as the Jass referee. Samschtig-Jass, which has been broadcast on Swiss television since 1967, is one of the oldest and most popular TV formats in Switzerland – a true cult format and an integral part of Swiss everyday life and gaming culture.

Emil Steinberger during his Jass sketch
Emil Steinberger provided a particularly emotional highlight: the Swiss comedy legend played a trump card that evening with roulette, bringing together the past and present in a unique way. He then performed his legendary sketch “Der Jasser” (The Card Player), which he had first performed in 1974. More than half a century later, Emil Steinberger brought the character of the passionate card player back to the stage – a nostalgic experience that showed how deeply Jass is rooted in the Swiss soul.
With her victory, Brigitte Heller won the jackpot of CHF 18,000, made possible by the long-standing commitment of PAX Insurance. But for the newly crowned Jass queen, the prize is much more than a personal accolade.

“A large portion of the money will go to help animals in need abroad—especially dogs and cats, my favorite animals,” says Heller. “With the rest of the money, I’m going to fulfill a lifelong dream: a trip to the Amazon rainforest.”
The role of card games in Switzerland – tradition, identity, and customs
Jassen is extremely popular in Switzerland and is considered the national card game. Jassen plays a cultural, social, and identity-forming role in Switzerland.
The official platform Living Traditions of Switzerland describes Jassen as “extremely popular” and as a national card game that is deeply rooted in everyday culture.
- It is played in bars, living rooms, clubs, and trains.
- It is part of social coexistence and creates community.
- It is considered a form of entertainment that connects generations.
Brigitte Heller is a prime example of a new generation of card players who not only preserve tradition but actively promote it. “Card games bring generations together and are part of Swiss identity,” she says. “I am extremely proud to represent this tradition as card game queen.”
This attitude also shapes her everyday working life. As a personal tour guide in her own company offering exclusive trips through Switzerland, she not only introduces international guests to spectacular landscapes and Swiss history, but also to authentic everyday culture. For her, this naturally includes Jassen, which she cheekily describes to her guests as the “most important Swiss game” – a cultural experience that goes far beyond classic sights.
Special thanks go to PAX Insurance, which has been supporting Samschtig-Jass for many years. With regular prizes throughout the year and a generous jackpot for the Jass Queen or King of the Year, it makes an important contribution to preserving and promoting the Swiss tradition of Jass.
Back in spring 2025, Brigitte Heller won CHF 1,000 on a Samschtig-Jass TV show. The fact that she was crowned Jass Queen 2025 just a few months later – on an evening that made Swiss television history thanks in part to Emil Steinberger’s cult appearance – makes her story one of those success stories that have made Samschtig-Jass so unique for decades.
Even before this great success in card games, Brigitte Heller had made headlines as the former hotel manager of the Hotel Monopol and Alpina in Lucerne: In 2015, she fought against food waste by using specially designed placemats at the breakfast buffet to raise awareness among guests from all over the world in six languages about the importance of treating food with care and only taking as much as they could eat – thereby reducing food waste in the business by 50–70% and donating the savings to children suffering from hunger. For this ethical, moral, and socially significant campaign, she was nominated by Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) for the 2015 SwissAward in the “Society” category, an award for personalities who stand out from the crowd through their attitude and commitment. This earlier commitment underscores her long-standing passion for bringing about concrete, sustainable change – far beyond the card table and national borders.
