The Zurich Opera House, formerly known as the Stadttheater, is located in the heart of the city on Sechseläutenplatz. Since its opening on October 1, 1891, it has offered space for 1100 visitors. In addition to musical theater and ballet performances, the opera house also presents philharmonic concerts, chamber music, recitals, productions for children and performances on the studio stage.
With 17 new productions and 26 revivals per year, the opera house is known for its versatility. The repertoire includes popular works, renowned singers, regular world premieres and ballet performances. World stars such as Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming and Placido Domingo as well as renowned conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christoph von Dohnányi and Carlo Rizzi regularly perform here.
Since September 2012, each season has opened with an open day and a performance is broadcast live on a screen on the place of Sechseläuten under the title “opera for all” or “ballet for all”.
