The Segantini Hut, also known as Chamanna Segantini sits above Pontresina in the Upper Engadine at an elevation of 2731 meters. It is dedicated to the memory of the artist Giovanni Segantini, who passed away there in September 1899.

Nowadays this hut offers a panorama of the Engadin valley. Draws visitors from near and far making it a sought after spot, for both locals and tourists worldwide.

In the footsteps of the famous painter Giovanni Segantini

The famous painter Giovanni Segantini greatly appreciated this place and used it as his “open-air studio”. In September 1899, he decided to move back to the Schafberg hut above Pontresina to complete his triptych of nature for the forthcoming world exhibition in Paris. On September 28, 1899, the artist died unexpectedly in the Segantini Hut of peritonitis. The Alpine triptych “Becoming” “Being” and “Passing” can be admired in the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.

Panorama tour to the Segantini hut

The panoramic tour lasts for about 2.5 hours. Provides views of the Bernina massif especially from the sunny terrace of the Segantini hut.

Starting from the Muottas Muragl mountain station the trail begins with a descent. Then crosses the Ova da Muragl mountain stream leading to a marked “climate trail” with several sharp hairpin turns up to the Schafberg. The climb is truly awe inspiring. The vista, from the terrace of the Segantini hut is even more breathtaking. If you feel like taking a break you can savor homemade treats on the sun terrace of the hut. Afterwards descend on an exposed mountain path, towards Alp Languard. Catch the chairlift to Pontresina.
