The Segantini Hut – Chamanna Segantini – is located above Pontresina in the Upper Engadine at an altitude of 2731 meters. It is named after the painter Giovanni Segantini, who died there in September 1899.
Today, the hut with its fabulous view of the Engadin is a popular excursion destination for locals and guests from all over the world.
In the footsteps of the famous painter Giovanni Segantini
The famous painter Giovanni Segantini greatly appreciated this place and used it as his “open-air studio”. In September 1899, he decided to move back to the Schafberg hut above Pontresina to complete his triptych of nature for the forthcoming world exhibition in Paris. On September 28, 1899, the artist died unexpectedly in the Segantini Hut of peritonitis. The Alpine triptych “Becoming” “Being” and “Passing” can be admired in the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.
Panorama tour to the Segantini hut
The panoramic tour, which takes around 2.5 hours, offers breathtaking views of the Bernina massif, especially from the sun terrace of the Segantini hut.
The trail from the Muottas Muragl mountain station begins leisurely downhill and then, after crossing the Ova da Muragl mountain stream, follows a marked “climate trail” with several steep hairpin bends to the Schafberg. The ascent is truly breathtaking, but the view from the sun terrace of the Segantini hut is even more impressive. If you want to take a break, you can enjoy home-made delicacies on the hut’s small sun terrace. Then head downhill on a partly exposed mountain path towards Alp Languard and the chairlift to Pontresina.
