The Schwarzsee can be found north of the Matterhorn at an elevation of 2,583 meters. To get there you can take the Schwarzsee mountain railway, from Zermatt. Opt for a scenic route on foot. One of the hikes in Zermatt will lead you to the Schwarzsee nestled at the base of the Matterhorn. This trek covers a distance of 9.7 km with an altitude difference of 1,010 m. Takes 3.5 hours to complete.
This serene lake is nourished by glaciers. Offers views of iconic peaks, like the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa massif, the Weisshorn, the Dent Blanche and the Mischabel group.
Covering an area of 0.1 km² this small mountain lake is accompanied by the “Maria zum Schnee” chapel standing nearby. On days the reflection of this quaint church can be seen in the crystal waters of the lake. Situated within Zermatts ski area Schwarzsee is known as a place where sunlight kisses thing in the morning – earning it the nickname “Schwarzsee Paradise.”
There is even a beach area where you can swim and sunbathe.
