Europe’s highest cogwheel railway
The highest open-air cogwheel railroad in Europe takes guests from Zermatt railroad station (1,605 m) directly to the summit of the Gornergrat 365 days a year. The journey takes 33 minutes and covers 1,484 meters in altitude. It runs for 9.4 kilometers over impressive bridges, through galleries and tunnels, past forests of larch and Swiss stone pine, stone gorges and mountain lakes.

The Gornergrat at 3,089 meters can be reached by cogwheel railroad from Zermatt. From the Gornergrat you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa massif and the glaciers. The ridge itself lies at an altitude of 3,135 meters and is around three kilometers from Zermatt. It is located between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier. The view of more than 20 four-thousand-meter peaks is breathtakingly beautiful.

The panorama is considered one of the most beautiful in the world: Monte Rosa massif with the highest Swiss mountain (Dufourspitze, 4,634 m), with a view of the second largest glacier in the Alps, the Gorner Glacier, as well as 29 mountains over 4,000 m high. The Kulmhotel is located on the Gornergrat at 3,100 m and is the highest mountain hotel in Europe. The Kulmhotel serves as an ideal base camp for mountain tours. Guests can expect pure high mountains with a gigantic panorama, surrounded by several four-thousand-meter peaks. The views of the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif from every room at the Kulmhotel are incomparable.

Guests can also take part in Dining with the Stars, a romantic dinner buffet with fondue chinoise, accompanied by an astronomer who provides spectacular views of the night sky and education.
