Panoramic journey over 196 bridges and through 55 tunnels
The UNESCO World Heritage RhB and untouched Alpine landscapes within your grasp: a trip on the Bernina Express is a travel experience in a class of its own.
The Bernina Express, the Rhaetian Railway’s flagship train, is a rolling legend and one of the most famous trains in the world. On the highest railroad tracks in Europe and the steepest in the world, the Bernina Express takes its guests on a unique journey through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges.
From the oldest city in Switzerland through wild and romantic gorges, past spectacular engineering structures, up to the eternal ice of the glaciers and back down to the palm trees in Tirano, Italy: no other railroad line crosses the Alps in such a spectacular way.
The modern panoramic coaches offer first-class travel comfort and make the impressive landscapes seem close enough to touch.
Crossing the Alps on the Bernina Express is undoubtedly one of the most impressive train journeys. During the journey, the Bernina Express passes cinematic scenes as it rolls over the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct, a landmark of the Rhaetian Railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Passengers experience fascinating sights such as the Montebello curve with views of the imposing Bernina massif, the Morteratsch glacier, the Lej Pitschen, Lej Nair and Lago Bianco lakes, Alp Grüm and the Brusio circular viaduct.
In summer, it is possible to extend the journey by bus from Tirano to Lugano.
